Automatic Irrigation System:
Your underground irrigation system should provide you with many years of trouble-free service providing these simple maintenance procedures are followed:
Weekly Maintenance:
- Inspect heads and nozzles for proper coverage and working condition.
2. Clean any dirty nozzles or filter screens.
3. Inspect components for damage due to lawn maintenance procedures.
Monthly Maintenance:
- Perform all weekly procedures.
2. Adjust times on controller to compensate for varying tempuratures and precipitation each
month.
3. Run through the controller to assure proper working condition.
Spring Start-Up Procedures:
- Close all drain valves located at each grouping of control valves and open the
valve farthest from the water meter.
2. Close petcocks on the backflow prevention device. This is the large brass
piece of equipment in a green box underground.
3. Close the drain located in the pit where the waterline was "tapped"
4. Open the supply valve very slowly. This valve is also located in the pit where
the tap was made.
5. Turn on one zone at the controller.
6. Open the ball valves on the backflow prevention device to energize the
mainline. These should be opened slowly. When a smooth flow of water
comes from the open valve, slowly close it.
7. If your controller is equipped with a battery, replace it. Set the time, day and
date. Program each station time according to the averages listed below.
8. Run through the entire system to assure proper working conditions and to
check for leaks.
As the season change, you will want to adapt the schedule to maintain your landscape in optimum condition. Average station times follow:
Drip Zones 45-60 Minutes
Spray Zones 20-30 Minutes
Rotary Zones 30-40 Minutes
Please understand these are only averages and will need to be adapted as weather conditions require.
It is important to repair any malfunctioning equipment as soon as possible, especially during the hot part of the summer. Check the system on a weekly basis, looking for clogged or misaligned heads, damage caused by mowers or heads that do not extend or retract fully.
Your system is designed to be drained for the winter by blowing it out, we strongly recommend clearing all lines with compressed air. This process removes all water and eliminates the damage caused by freezing weather. If you contract with us to winterize and turn on your systen, we guarantee there will be no freeze damage. Any damage discovered will be repaired at no charge to you.
If you decide to winterize your own system, here is how to do it:
Use an air compressor capable of delivering at least 75psi at 100cfm. Open the valve nearest the water meter. Close the shut off valve at the point where the water supply was tapped. Connect the air supply hose to the blowout valve and slowly apply pressure to the system. When a clear stream of air is exiting the open valve, use the controller to open each zone, one at a time. BE SURE TO RUN THROUGH THE SYSTEM TWICE TO BE SURE ALL WATER IS EVACUATED.
When you are sure all water is out of the system, close the air supply and remove the hose. Open all drain valves and leave the petcocks on the backflow prevention device open 1/4 turn.
